Examinations
Exams are an important milestone in a student’s journey through Vovinam Việt Võ Đạo, providing an opportunity to level up by earning new belts and stripes while reinforcing one’s growth as a Vovinam disciple. Held annually during the month of June, exams allow students to showcase their abilities, discipline, and understanding of the art. Each exam is composed of three core components: techniques, philosophy, and sparring.
Exam Details
Technical requirements vary by rank and are outlined on the Training Program webpage. Philosophical material is distributed in class and must be learned, understood, and recited orally to an examiner. Exams are overseen and marked by qualified Yellow Belt instructors or Red Belt masters. Sparring is required starting at the Dark Blue Belt level, where blue belts spar against one opponent and yellow belts spar against two opponents in matches typically lasting two minutes. Elbows, knees, grappling, throwing, and attacks below the belt are generally not permitted. Points are earned through effective attacking techniques, flying leg techniques, and the practical application of self-defence skills.
Following the completion of exams, official results are distributed to students after the Founding Master Ceremony, which takes place approximately one week after the exam period. This ceremony honors Grandmaster Nguyễn Lộc and marks an important moment of reflection and respect within the Vovinam community. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass the exam and advance to the next belt or stripe level.
